On 2.22.22 Justine and Ryan married in a San Diego courthouse elopement. Eloping in San Diego is a little different. It’s definitely not what comes to mind when you think about a typical courthouse wedding. Technically the building where weddings are performed is not the courthouse- it’s the San Diego Administrator’s building. It’s an historic building with gorgeous features and not the norm at all for a government building.
Built in 1938 the design was intended to complement structures in Balboa Park, with a mix of Spanish Revival and Beaux-Arts architecture. Southwestern touches such as a red Mission-style tile roof, glazed Franciscan tile, and arched doors. As a San Diego wedding and elopement photographer I absolutely love the San Diego Courthouse. The building has such a rich history and is full of artistic details that provide a beautiful backdrop for your San Diego wedding ceremony.
A couple details about getting hitched here. If you’re just looking to pick up a license there are 4 more locations throughout the county. They also perform ceremonies, but the most scenic spot is the downtown location. Here are a few more tips direct from the county website.
Another great thing about getting married at the downtown San Diego courthouse is there are so many nearby places to take couples portraits before or after the wedding. Some of my favorite spots for wedding portraits are Sunset Cliffs, Coronado Beach, and Balboa Park.
There’s also an abundance of awesome places to celebrate after you’ve exchanged vows. Celebrate with tacos and margaritas at nearby King & Queen Cantina or Miguels Cocina. Pop some bubbly and enjoy the view at The Nolen Rooftop or grab a beer at Ketch Brewing just steps away at the Pierside Port. Splurge on a fancy dinner at Born and Raised Steakhouse or Mister A’s– a San Diego classic.
Planning a San Diego elopement? It would be my absolute pleasure to be part of your wedding. Hit me up and let’s get planning!!
